Luther Allison (1939 - 1997) Luther Allison (Widener , August 17, 1939 - Madison, August 12, 1997) was an American blues guitarist. From the original
Widener Arkansas, the family moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1951. Before this transfer had learned to play the guitar, and started to listen to the authors blues. In 1954 he began to show up in the blues clubs of Chicago with the hope of being invited someone to play on stage. He managed to play with the band Howlin 'Wolf and James Cotton.
The great opportunity presented itself in 1957, when Muddy Waters invited him to go on stage with him. Thanks to that meeting Allison begins to play in the blues club circuit in the late '50s and early '60s, and recorded his first single in 1965. Then signed a contract with Delmark Records in the fall of 1967, and in 1969 released his debut album, Love Me Mama. His performance Year Arbor Blues Festival in 1969 received great acclaim, and for this he was invited to the following three editions of the festival. He went on tour along the United States and in 1972 was hired by Motown Records, one of the few blues artists to be successful.
Since the mid-'70s began to tour in Europe, and thanks to the positive response of the audience moved to France in 1977, where he settled for the next fifteen years. Allison was known for his live performances, in which ran ten minutes long guitar solos, and also for the relationship he had with the audience during performances. During his concerts he used to launch a long rope to the public, ending rope attached to his Gibson Les Paul.
The manager and European agent Allison, Thomas Ruf, founded his own record label in 1994, Ruf Records. Allison signed to this label and at the same time he signed for the Alligator Records for American distribution. The founder of Alligator Records, Bruce Iglauer, convinced Allison to return the United States. Then recorded the album Soul Fixin 'Man in 1994, which was followed by a tour in the United States and Canada. Allison is the album Soul Fixin 'Man won four WC Handy Awards (award established by the NGO Blues Foundation in honor of blues musician William Christopher Handy. The award has changed his words in The Blues Music Award in 2006).
By James Solberg Band after him, Allison continued to tour relentlessly, and with the development of Blue Streak in 1995 earned Other Handy Awards and greater fame. He also a presenter for Living Blues Awards and was hosted on the covers of major magazines.
In the middle of his tour of 1997, in the summer, Allison was taken to the hospital because she complained of chest pains and breathing problems. Unfortunately he was diagnosed with lung cancer whose metastases were now spreading to the spine. After a short period of coma, Luther Allison died 12 August 1997, five days before his 58th birthday. His album Reckless was released shortly after his death.
